THE MISSION

My first exploration into concept art, I wanted to see if creating pieces of art for movies, tv shows, video games, books, etc. would be something that I would want to pursue as a career. Using references like Simon Stålenhag’s brilliant art books for inspiration, I wanted to create a world that feels real and lived in. Each piece is created with the intention of being a strong enough composition to stand on its own while also connecting to a larger overarching story.

THE IDEA

After a lot of workshopping and ideation, the current story I have is a series of personal logs filed by one of the chief scientists aboard a planetary observation vessel that’s stationed above a recently discovered habitable planet in the Poehlmann System. However, unbeknownst to the colonists on the planet, the main objective of the colonization project is to test how viruses from Earth react to the planet’s sun and atmosphere through infection of the colonists.

THE PROJECT

“Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one.” – Mr. Spock

How far are we as a species willing to go for the “greater good”? At what point does the price of survival become too high to pay? These are questions that up until my assignment on the O.R.S. Kelvin I never concerned myself with pondering. It’s easy to ignore or brush past the moral and ethical questions raised by our work as dealing in hypoehticals allowed a certain degree of cognitive dissonance. Myself and my associates were content to allow the “arm-chair thinkers” and philosophers to entertain themselves in debating the implications of our work so long as we never had to hear about it.

I will forever be haunted by how long I was willing to watch my fellow humans suffer for the “greater good” on HL-12-72. I don’t know if this will ever see the light of day, but if it does, then consider this my apology to humanity and my attempt to slightly repent for my actions.
